Ministry to the homeless

The Peoples Church free lunch program, 2 Li'l Fishes, serves lunch several times a week for 120-180 people who stay in nearby shelters or live in the local community.  Since the Salvation Army closed its breakfast and lunch programs in September of 2008, the need is even greater.

Summer Mission              Labor Day picnic 2009 pix

The annual Labor Day Picnic was started by the late Billy Hand Robinson to honor the hard work homeless men, women and children put in to stay alive for the year. Living on the streets and in shelters is not easy. Billy, a Peoples Church member who himself had experienced homelessness, understood the tremendous energy and effort it took to find meals, shelter, a restroom, or a place to relax in relative privacy.

In 2009, five hundred-some guests attended the picnic and enjoyed a bit of softball and a first-rate barbecue complete with ribs, chicken, veggies, bread, chips, cookies, and lemonade. This annual event is a special time for Peoples Church members and is part of our ministry to celebrate the worth and dignity of all people.

Winter Mission

Each year, Peoples Church hosts a festive Christmas dinner for the homeless and low-income folks in our neighborhood. The serving tables are weighed down with turkey, ham, dressing, gravy, mixed vegetables, rolls, cranberry sauce, and cake. We decorate Anderson Hall and fill each table with holiday treats. Temple Sholom provides volunteers for helping Isaac Barrantine cook and serve

Camp Gilead

Peoples Church also supports Camp Gilead, a ministry in Cebu, the Philippines, which educates children who never before had a chance to go to school.  It was started by Rev. Sam Manansala, a former Peoples Church pastor, to give back to the community where his roots are.  Some of these students are now entering college - even a few dollars go a long way.
